President’s Message

July 21, 2020

Dear Friends,

As you know we’ve had to cancel our April and July 2020 quarterly meetings due to the pandemic.  We are looking forward to the day when we can be together again, but it may be awhile. At present our usual meeting locations are closed and we are not expecting to be able to meet in person. In the meantime, we are looking into the possibility of having our Fall Quarterly meeting via Zoom.  Our priority is to keep everyone safe and healthy.

Isn’t it amazing that we have all learned new phrases like, social distancing, flattening the curve and of course–meetings on Zoom!  During this time have you reflected on your own experiences, both during the pandemic and throughout your life time?  Have you taken time to record or write down some of your experiences?  That’s how history is written, first-person accounts of events are often very interesting reading.  We are always looking for stories for the SCHS Newsletter and are willing to interview you.

There are a variety of online resources for history related information; the resources are vast, start exploring!  Try starting with mohistory.org.  There are all kinds of free resources including some that can be accessed online with your St. Louis County Library card; visit slcl.org.

While we are apart, the SCHS Board of Directors have been meeting—in person, outdoors and socially distanced under a shade tree at the Ross A. Wagner Historical Center.  You are invited to be a member of the Board!  It’s the time of year to begin thinking about candidates for the 2021 Board.  Please call Jim Crooks at (314) 293-2540 if you are interested in serving.  We need volunteers if we are to continue as a viable organization!

Repair and painting of the barn is complete.  It looks great!  Grown and Gathered Heirloom Farm has begun limited operations; follow on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/grownandgatheredheirloomfarm.  “Sappington-Concord, A History” is available for purchase at the Loft Gift Shop at the Sappington House.  And as always, we need your support, donations are especially appreciated at this time, our expenses at the Ross A. Wagner Historical Center are ongoing.

Be well!

SCHS president’s New Years message
from the January 6, 2014 Facebook video

“Hi! New Year’s greetings from Sappington-Concord Memorial Park!

I am here today in front of the World War II Honor Roll, the center of the park and the center of the annual Memorial Day ceremony that the SCHS holds here in May. The Memorial Day ceremony honors the service of veterans to our country and to remind us that they went out to protect our freedoms.

Today it is cold and snowy here, maybe a little lonely feeling, but this park is always here at the center of the Sappington-Concord community. In May, when the weather is sunny and warm, we will gather together here in person to respect and remember our veterans.

To learn more, go to the website at schs.ws. There is a page under the About Us tab with a message from the president. It has links to info about the park, the Memorial Day ceremony and news about the Society.

So see you on the web! I am Stephen Hanpeter, president of the Sappington-Concord Historical Society, and I want to wish you all a very happy new year and a prosperous one in 2014!”

Thanks to the SCHS board and members for the
great year of 2013

The year 2013 was a great one for SCHS and it would not have been possible without the leadership of the SCHS board of directors and officers. They are hard working, dedicated, creative and fun. Other SCHS working groups include the newsletter team, the Memorial Day committee, the tour committee and the veterans committee. In addition, many SCHS members help at the general membership meetings and presentations to make sure the events and meetings are run well and that the SCHS members and public feel welcome.

I also want to thank the other organizations that work with the SCHS.  They help both directly and indirectly to put on the events and programs that make the SCHS the member-oriented, community-oriented organization that it is. Some of the organizations include the Lindbergh Schools, the St. Louis County Library system, Friendship Village South, Boy Scout Troop 646, the Thomas Sappington House, Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, Missouri History Museum, and Sunset Hills Historical Society. They and their contributions are listed on the SCHS Community page.

I look forward to a great year in 2014 and to working with the SCHS board, members and organizations that work in tandem with SCHS to make the new year 2014 just as fine a year as the last year.

The “History Dance Card” – History in your life

Did you get your copy of the History Dance Card at the November 20 daytime presentation on manners by Emily Jaycox? If not, get your copy on the History and Me page or get a copy at the January general meeting. There is also a listing of events held in 2013 on the History and Me page. It is a good review of the events and you can check off the the ones that you attended. Of course, this historical society does not give tests or grades, so the dance card and the events listing are for your enjoyment and your thoughts only!

By the way, Emily Jaycox will be speaking again on The Changing Forms of Polite Behavior at Friendship Village on January 9 at 2:30 in the afternoon. If you missed it in November, you get a second chance to see her excellent talk. See Events 2014 for details. See the page The Changing Forms of Polite Behavior to learn more about Ms. Jaycox and the subject of her talk.

Book reading

We will be reading the book, “Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker: A Novel,” and discussing it on January 15th in the Anne Morrow Lindbergh Room at Lindbergh High School. There will be a second discussion time in February. The themes in this book will go with the topics of two presentions at Friendship Village: Abbi Telander speaks on “Sunlight and Shadow: Women’s Spaces at White Haven” and Pam Sanfilippo speaks on “Ulysses and Julia: The White House Years.” For more info on dates and times, see Events 2014. The themes of women, race, politics, life in the White House and the Civil War era are all touched on in the novel. See more on the page Book Reading.

St. Louis’ 250th anniversary

The year 2014 got off to an exciting start with this being the 250th anniversary of the founding of St.Louis. See more information on the St Louis 250 page.

SCHS gift membership

The SCHS gift membership is a good gift to give to someone in your life who is interested in history and the Sappington-Concord area. Giving the gift helps them realize their interest and it helps SCHS to reach more people. Get more info about the gift membership on the Gift Membership page. An image of the gift membership card is shown below.

January is time to pay SCHS membership dues

Remember that it is SCHS membership renewal time here at the beginning of a fresh year. You may pay your dues for 2014 at the January meeting or get the membership form on the Joining page and send in your dues with the form. Thank you very much for renewing your membership. Because SCHS is a membership organization, your membership is important to the board and the whole Society.

Happy New Year everyone!
